Frequently asked questions

Here is what to expect from the Adopt Canada introduction and purchasing process.

Am I donating money to Adopt Canada?
No. The program is designed around purchasing items for a specific family's Amazon.ca wishlist. No cash changes hands between you and the family.
Do I have to buy everything on a family's wishlist?
No. The family identifies what they need, and you choose what you are comfortable purchasing. There is no required spending amount.
How will I be introduced to a family?
After you submit the supporter form, the people operating the site may follow up and help introduce you to a participating Canadian household. Submitting the form does not guarantee an introduction.
How are items delivered?
You purchase selected items through Amazon.ca. Amazon.ca ships the order directly to the Canadian household.
Can Amazon.ca Prime help reduce shipping costs?
Possibly. An Amazon.ca Prime membership includes free shipping on eligible Prime items to qualifying Canadian delivery addresses, which may reduce shipping costs if you expect to place several orders. Prime is optional, and it does not make every item or address eligible for free shipping. Look for the Prime badge and review the shipping charge at checkout before buying. You can review Amazon.ca Prime delivery benefits directly with Amazon.
Will I see the family's home address?
Wishlist address visibility is controlled through Amazon.ca. Adopt Canada aims to share only the information needed to complete the match and purchase.
Do I have to keep helping the same family?
No. Support is voluntary. You may return to an updated wishlist whenever you want and are able, but there is no ongoing obligation.
Is Adopt Canada a charity or nonprofit?
No. Adopt Canada currently has no corporate, nonprofit, charitable, or tax-exempt legal status. It is an introduction-only website. Purchases are voluntary personal transactions between individual adults, and Adopt Canada does not issue tax receipts.
What kinds of items are included?
The program focuses on practical household necessities, such as pantry food, personal care products, children's needs, laundry supplies, and other essential items identified by the family.
Where can Canadians request assistance?
AdoptCanada.org is designed for the American audience—people who may choose to “adopt” and support a Canadian family. LifelineUS.org is intended for Canadians to request assistance from those supporters. That Canadian-facing site will be developed separately.
